Childhood obesity and associated health conditions have risen in recent years. As a result of this concerning trend, the Lifestyle Management Institute (LMI) has developed a comprehensive, family-centered weight management program, FUNdamental Family Fitness. The LMI's FUNdamental Family Fitness Program is available to any overweight or obese child, eight years of age or older, and parent(s) interested in improving their health through a referral from their pediatrician.
This family-centered program begins with a comprehensive evaluation by the FUNdamental Family Fitness Team consisting of:
- Assessment by a registered nurse
- Nutrition assessment by a registered dietician, and
- A behavioral health assessment as needed by a licensed psychologist.
The results of the overall evaluation then become the basis for the family’s personal health management plan.
Through education, exercise and counseling, this program can help identify and modify risk factors that increase the likelihood for chronic disease. These sessions are designed to improve knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the team explains what contributed to health concerns to insure that families understand what must be done to stay healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The program’s interdisciplinary team of professionals includes advance practice nurses, registered nurses, dieticians, behavioral health specialists and clinical exercise physiologists. The program meets twice a week for eight weeks at the LMI. During the sessions, the child and parent(s) will participate in supervised therapeutic exercise and education classes. Upon completion of the FUNdamental Family Fitness Program, participants may continue to participate in an exercise program at the LMI, at home or at any local YMCA where they will be taught skills needed to continue a lifetime of healthy living.
